"The safest general characterization
of the European philosophical tradition
is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato"
A. N. Whitehead, Process and Reality, 1929
Most of what passes for the modern indie rock music tradition is little more than a series of footnotes to Morrissey and Marr.

It's just a shame that Morrisey is such an anus though, is it not? His direct legacy - to my untutored ear - is more The Streets than anything else. Adrian cunting Mole music. Music to slash your wrists to in a teenage bedsit. Johnny Marr, though, together with Andy Summers and The Edge (The Police and U2, as i'm sure I don't need to tell you) have had much more of a lasting legacy in guitar playing, relying heavily on guitar effects to create a sound quite different to that before.
