Coles Corner - Richard Hawley

This is a terrific record, a real slow burner which just gets better and better with each listen.

I had it on the ipod on the train home from Newark last night - I was full of wine, it was raining, it was late, it really suited the mood.

I was listening to it again on the way home from work tonight, and the final track segued brilliantly into Robert Johnson's Come On In My Kitchen..

2006 is beginning to blur into mellow female singer songwriters. Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Isobel Campbell, Cat Power, Sol Seppy. When the iPod shuffle gets going I'm occasionally at a loss to know which is which. Not Anniemal though - my current guilty pleasure. An even more saccharine nordic album than the second Concretes offering.

was discussing the recent lack of good records with Alex the other day - my 'best of the year so far mix' currently includes Primal Scream, Belle and Sebastien (Blues are still Blue), Richard Hawley b side 'I'm just here to get my baby out of jail', The Lords, Shack, Moz, Neil Young, and that's more or less it.

I'm with you on Belle & Sebastian; that's the album that's really turned me onto them. But there have been some other really good releases. I would return to Cat Power and Isobel Campbell from my last post. Add to that Springsteen, Gnarls Barkley (single of the year so far; superb on Jools the other week), Matisyahu (more than a novelty, though last years live album is better), Mogwai (excellent as always), Johnny Cash (proof that the Man in Black had discovered the stripped back sound of American Recordings decades before meeting Rick Rubin; this is essential), Toumani Diabete - best non-English language album I've bought since Arabesque - and that's praise indeed). And some good compilations too - Thommo boxed set is mixed, but the good stuff is very very good indeed. Zero, the Martin Hamnett retrospective, is very good. As is the Nick Rhodes & John Taylor produced Only After Dark - a brilliant period piece of early 80's inspiration - Tubeway Army, Human League, Kraftwerk, Donna Summer - arguably my album of 2006 so far.

Cat Power is a new name to me, but I'll attempt a download...Matisyahu is a big favourite with Chris, I'm still making my mind up there. The new Cash CD is very tempting, as is the Martin Hannett comp. Richard Hawley is still the one for me though, and it's hard to imagine a better record appearing this year (yes I know it was released in 2005)...for my money the best LP to come out since Abattoir Blues.
