ok, this is a quick one...the last track randomly selected for me before retiring tonight turns out to be Come Out, by Steve Reich. This is a tape loop, a recording which Reich made in 1966, the details of which are here.
It's one of the oddest things I have ever heard, (on headphones it is almost hypnotic - a voice saying 'come out to show them' repeatedly, at different speeds, going in and out of phase, echoing over itself, coherent then incoherent, yes it sounds wanky if you describe it in words, but try listening to it) according to iTunes, it is categorized as 'pop'. I so wanted to put some Reich on my best of the year - both the Four Tet remix of Drumming and the hidden remix of Come Out from Remixed 2006 were on the shortlist. But at 8 minutes and 14 minutes they were both just that bit too long. It's impossible to describe Reich to someone who hasn't heard anything by him, and it does sound like it's going to be pretentious to the point of being unlistenable. And talking of the best of the year, having burned a disc last week, I've realised that it's all wrong. It can't finish with two 8 minute epics, which does mean there are room for 15 tracks not 14 (so it's welcome back to Camille and Jenny Lewis), but I've also remembered the Teddy Thompson album, which has to be included.
just spotted the teddy thompson album actually came out last November. In which case, why on earth wasn't it on my compilation last year? I still may have to force it on.
I thought it was last year, though I think it had a re-release this year. He was good at the Green Man..
My final selection is pretty much there; I was trying to get some kind of Peel content to keep up the tradition, but I'm struggling...
