One Vile Fucking Task After Another

Since the year is winding up very quickly, I guess it's time to wonder what might be featuring on this year's Best Of the year CDR...

these are some of the folks fighting for a place on my coveted final 15:

Primal Scream, Belle and Sebastian, Bert Jansch (great new LP out last week), Mogwai, Lords, Secret Machines, Richard Hawley, The Archie Bronson Outfit, Micah P Hinson, Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, Mozzer, Arctic Monkeys, and Bob Dylan...and Jake Thackray. (via a cheeky reissue, the only one on the list)

well that's how things stand tonight, things may change by the year end, as they usually do.

i've been giving this a bit of thought as well. given my current taste for sludge metal epics my cd may be a double.

which sludge metal epics are these Dave?
might have to do a double meself, a quiet disc and a loud disc, but half the fun is deciding what makes the final selection, and in what order...

the first track on the om lp clocks in at 15 minutes, the finale to boris' "pink" lp is about 20 minutes.also theres a new charger lp on the way which apparently has a few lengthy tunes which i'm sure will be great.
not been such a good year for "pop" though. apart from sexyback i cant think of anything.

pop is dead, long live sludge metal.

There's likely to be a lot of crossover here...

Primal Scream, Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan all definites

Jansch and Dylan in the running.

Also in the mix: Espers, Boards of Canada, Gary Numan (via the brilliant Only After Dark compilation), Comets on Fire, Salsa Celtica, Springsteen (just a brilliant album).

Other possibles (can I justify them two years in a row) Sufjan Stevens & Seth Lakeman. Missing a third consecutive pick looks to be Frank Black - Fast Man Raider Man is no worse than his last two albums, but as a double CD began to bore me (although boasts the song title of the year in "I'm Not Dead (I'm in Pittsburgh")). Should try to pick something from the Delgados Peel compilation, and maybe some overlong guitar workout from the Thommo box set.

Has to be some French stuff in there - Camille for sure, and either Jane Birkin or Charlotte Gainsbourg (despite Birkin's haunting cover of Mother Stands for Comforet, daughter is pipping mother at the moment - 5:55 is one of the albums of the year without a shadow of doubt).

And of course, I've held back a few surprises. Including both my songs of 2005 (too late for last year) and 2006, neither of which have appeared on an official CD release.

Oh, and then there was the spate of women singer songwriter albums at the start of the year. Perm one from Neko Case, Jenny Lewis and Cat Power.
Interesting to see that since he's been re-released on a major label, Seth Lakeman is now being flogged in Sainsburys and playlisted on Virgin.
As for right now, playing a lot of Steve Reich in honour of the great man's forthcoming 70th birthday. 5cd retrospective out on Monday; £15 from Amazon - a bargain. Hmmm...which would justify a bit of Music for 18 Musicians on the compilation...

Still tweaking mine...with a few previous favourites being chopped, and some new tracks coming in. The new Bonnie Prince Billy LP is v good, and he usually bores the nads off me. Heard a track on the Freak Zone, which was excellent. The La's BBC sessions is also very good, much more raw than the album.
there are several tracks I could include from the Mogwai album, and the Bert Jansch.
